6 Foods to Avoid if You Get Canker Sores

Canker sores, or aphthous ulcers, are small oral craters that may develop inside the cheek, the lip, or on the tongue. Anyone who has suffered from canker sores knows that these painful lesions make it difficult to eat and can make day-to-day activities unpleasant. Research has shown that canker sores are most common in women, teens, and young adults.

Unlike other oral sores, canker sores do not result from viral or bacterial build-ups. Instead, an individual’s diet might be the number one cause of their canker sores, regardless of oral hygiene routines. Avoiding foods that exacerbate or contribute to canker sore development is helpful if you regularly suffer from these ulcers. Read on for seven common foods and drinks that can worsen your canker sores.

1. Citrus Fruits / Juices

Although citrus fruits are rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, which can support the immune system, they also contain other acidic compounds that can be harmful. Citrus fruits contain salicylic acid, which can irritate your gums, and sometimes cause canker sores when there is an open oral wound.

Those prone to canker sores or suffering from them should avoid certain citrus fruits and juices such as grapefruits, lemons, limes, oranges, and pineapples. Instead, try taking supplemental vitamins if you are experiencing active sores.

2. Coffee

According to the National Coffee Association, nearly 63% of Americans begin their day with a cup of coffee. Even though a cup of coffee might be the highlight of your morning, it might delay the canker sore healing process or contribute to the onset of future canker sores.

Like citrus fruits, coffee is high in salicylic acid, which can irritate the soft tissue in the mouth and cause or even worsen canker sores. Trying caffeinated tea will reduce these risks while still providing you with that kick-start to your morning!

3. Spicy Foods

Like highly acidic foods, spicy foods can lead to cheek and gum irritation for certain people.

If you know you are prone to canker sores, you should decrease the amount of spice in your foods, especially when you have oral lesions.

4. Alcohol

One possible explanation for alcohol’s contribution to the onset of canker sores is the likelihood of a folic acid deficiency. Folic acid, a type of vitamin B that assists in DNA repair, is often expelled from the body after drinking.

People with nutritional or vitamin B12 deficiencies are far more likely to wake up with sores after drinking due to a lack of essential nutrients.

Cankerboy’s Canker Sore Solution works to prevent sores by regulating the amount of essential nutrients in the body, attacking the root issue, and stopping canker sores before they have a chance to develop.

5. Soda

Sodas often contain high amounts of acid and corn syrup, both of which can lead to oral inflammation and gum irritation. Similarly, most sodas are high in sugar and can weaken oral health and form canker sores.

Although diet or low-sugar sodas may seem like a good alternative, they also have high amounts of syrup and other harmful ingredients. It might be wise to remove soda from your diet for the benefit of your overall oral hygiene.

6. Nuts / Seeds

Nuts and seeds contain the amino acid L-Arginine, which sometimes causes canker sores due to its tendency to dilate blood vessels, thus making the healing process for oral lesions more difficult.

Salted nuts and seeds can be especially bad, as the high sodium content dries the mouth and can cause inflammation in the gum lining, making you more susceptible to developing canker sores.
